At my mom's office holiday party this past December (I was her date) one of her colleagues came up to me and asked without hesitation, "Did you get Botox? Your skin looks amazing." Realizing pretty quickly that he wasn't kidding, I attempted to hide my surprise and embarrassment by answering informally with a light chuckle, "No man, I scrubbed my face." The truth was, I was kind of shocked that he would assume I would actually get botox and that he would come right out and ask! That morning I had simply scrubbed my face!
It's something I've done since my late teens when I started having to shave - it's a great way to get rid of dead skin and also prevent ingrown hairs. It also feels good and I enjoy the invigorating sensation, the same way using a nice bristled hair brush on your scalp feels good.
Ever wonder why a baby’s skin is so soft? It’s because babies naturally replace their skin cells every few days. As you grow older, however, the rate of cell turnover slows down a lot. Dead cells on your skin’s surface stick around much longer, which can make your complexion look dull and lifeless. By removing these dead skin cells through exfoliation, you can make up for the gradual slowing down of your natural skin-renewal process, and improve the tone and texture of your skin.
As my embarrassment subsided and my mom's colleague walked away, I suddenly thought back to when other people had commented on my skin in the past. And sure enough, it was usually after a good scrub! So of course being the responsible founder that I am, my first instinct was "I need to share this with the Aurelian fam!"
Now I'm talking more to the guys here, because for the women out there we all know the term "exfoliating" is old news to you and probably something many of you already incorporate in your wellness routine. But as guys, we're often a little behind in the wellness game, so seriously gents, listen up. This tip is easy, you only have to do it once a week, and it makes your skin look healthy and youthful and on top of that is actually good for your health. If you can withstand the occasional embarrassing compliment at your next public gathering, read ahead.
Mission: Exfoliate skin once a week.
You can use an exfoliating soap like St. Ives which you can find at any commercial drugstore. Depending on the sensitivity of your skin you can choose one for normal or sensitive skin. What I've done in the past is apply the St. Ives to my face and body before getting in the shower. I rub it in with my hands in a circular motion for a few minutes. Then hop in the shower and wash it off. Alternatively, you can also apply it in the shower once you're already wet. I prefer before because I find that it works more effectively and vigorously that way, but if you have sensitive skin you may want to opt for applying once your skin is already wet.
Alternatively, you can use an exfoliating cloth/towel (this is what I currently use). You lather the exfoliating towel up with soap and get scrubbing. Again, if you have sensitive skin, go easy on the face and be mindful of the pressure you're applying when scrubbing.
You'll be left with smooth skin that has a nice glow to it. Dead skin will be gone, exposing a fresh layer which allows your skin to breathe easy and not only feels great but is good for your health (the skin is the body's largest organ after all). And if you have to shave often for work or prefer to remain clean shaven, exfoliating once a week is great for getting rid of stubborn in-grown hairs.
Your skin's going to need some moisture now. Did you know that you can use Aurelian tinctures topically to great effect on the skin, including the face? The MCT oil and hemp extract combo packs a powerful punch. The MCT works as a natural moisturizer and the CBD is amazing for reducing inflammation, acne and/or redness. Shake the bottle well, place a few drops on fingertips, and apply to face.
Let me know how you get on. Fingers crossed I'm the only one that has to deal with the botox question.
